Standpipe systems: Class I, II, and III hose connections

One-line orientation

A standpipe is a riser with hose connections. Firefighters or occupants operate the hose manually, while the riser itself may be wet or dry and may receive water automatically or manually.

Key points

  • Operation: the hose is operated manually; do not assume the riser is a manual-pressure system. The riser may be wet or dry, and its water supply may be automatic or manual.
  • Keep the classifications separate: wet or dry describes the condition of the pipe; manual or automatic describes how the required water supply is provided.
  • Where required: standpipe triggers are about fire-department reach. The model-code default is Class III; a fully sprinklered building may qualify for a listed Class I exception. See the trigger table below for the detailed height and story conditions.
  • Three classes by user and hose size:
    • Class I2½-inch hose connections; for firefighters; located in stairwells and firefighting locations.
    • Class II1½-inch hose connections with a hose provided; for occupants; located in hallways or near exits.
    • Class III — provides both 2½-inch and 1½-inch connections; serves both firefighters and occupants.
