Egressconcept
Area of refuge and standpipes in the stair
One-line orientation
Two things live in or beside the exit stair and get swapped on the exam: the area of refuge (where people who can’t self-evacuate wait for rescue) and the standpipe (where firefighters tap water) — same location, opposite purposes.
Key points
- Area of refuge:
- A protected space, typically within or at the stairwell, where occupants who cannot self-evacuate wait for assistance during an emergency.
- Provides a clear 30 × 48 inch wheelchair space and two-way communication (often a panic button to alert/summon assistance).
- Part of the accessible means of egress; it buys time, it is not the final exit.
- Standpipes:
- A vertical water-supply pipe with hose connections (valves) at floors/landings, located in or near the stair.
- Purpose: let firefighters connect hoses at the fire floor rather than hauling hose up the stairs — a firefighting tool, not an occupant feature.
- Shared location, different users: both are organized around the protected stair, which is why they get confused — but one shelters occupants and the other arms firefighters.
