Portland cement comes in five ASTM types tuned to sulfate exposure, heat of hydration, and early
strength — and the exam tests whether you can match the right type to the condition (and not swap
Type III for Type IV).
Key points
The five Portland cement types:
Type I — General use. Default when no special exposure applies.
Type II — Moderate sulfate resistance / moderate heat. Typical for underground work and
retaining walls.
Type III — High early strength. Gains strength quickly; common in precast.
Type IV — Low heat of hydration. For massive structures where heat buildup must be
limited.
Type V — High sulfate resistance. For extreme sulfate exposure.
Air-entrained variants: an “A” suffix (e.g., Type IA) marks a cement with built-in
air-entrainment for freeze-thaw durability.
Admixtures (added at the mixer to modify behavior):
Air-entraining — creates many small, well-distributed bubbles that improve freeze-thaw
durability.
Accelerators / retarders — speed up or slow down set/curing.
Water-reducers / superplasticizers — cut mixing water (lower w/c → stronger) while
keeping the mix workable.
Pozzolans / supplementary cementitious materials — fly ash, slag, silica fume;
partially replace cement, often producing a denser, stronger mix with lower embodied energy.
Coloring agents — change the appearance of the concrete.
