Fire-rated wall assemblies: Type X gypsum build-up

One-line orientation

A fire-rated wall gets its hourly rating from a tested combination of framing, Type X gypsum, fasteners, joints, and details. Layer count is a useful study cue, but the listed assembly governs.

Key points

  • Type X gypsum is the rated material. Standard gypsum board gives only about 30 minutes; the hour ratings come from 5/8” Type X and the number of layers.
  • Layer-to-hour build-up:
    • 1-hour: one layer of 5/8” Type X gypsum each side of the studs.
    • 2-hour: two layers each side.
    • 3-hour: three layers each side, or CMU/concrete block with an added gypsum layer.
  • Why it works: the gypsum core absorbs heat via a chemical reaction when heated, delaying heat transfer; more layers = longer delay.
  • Studs: commercial walls typically use metal studs, residential walls wood studs, at 16” or 24” on center.
  • Continuity depends on the wall type and tested assembly. Some rated walls must run deck-to-deck; others may terminate at a tested rated ceiling. In every case, follow the listed seams, joints, penetrations, and termination details.
  • Seams are staggered, taped, and mudded. Joints between boards are offset layer to layer and covered with tape and joint compound, so the membrane stays a continuous fire barrier across the joints rather than presenting a straight-through gap at every seam.
