Grade beam vs tie beam
One-line orientation
In casual use “grade beam” and “tie beam” get swapped, but they do different structural jobs — a grade beam carries vertical load, a tie beam only ties elements together laterally — and the exam tests exactly that distinction.

- Grade beam:
- A reinforced concrete beam that distributes structural load to the foundation.
- Carries vertical load — commonly spans between piles or piers to support a wall.
- Also braces column footings and provides lateral bracing and a level construction surface.
- Tie beam:
- Only provides lateral support — it ties foundation elements together so they act as a unit.
- Does not carry vertical building load.
- The test: ask “is this beam holding the building up (vertical load), or just linking footings (lateral)?” Vertical → grade beam. Lateral-only → tie beam.
