Occupancy Classificationconcept
Business vs educational vs mercantile (B / E / M)
One-line orientation
B, E, and M are the everyday commercial/school groups, and the single most-tested fact is that a university is Business (B), not Educational (E) — because E stops at grade 12.
Key points
- B — Business: office, professional, or service-type transactions, including storage of records and accounts. Examples: banks, offices, outpatient clinics — and animal hospitals/kennels. Colleges and universities are B.
- E — Educational: buildings used for educational purposes through the 12th grade — schools and academic educational buildings. Not colleges or universities.
- M — Mercantile: buildings for the display and sale of merchandise — department stores, markets, malls.
