Delta vs wye transformer configurations: voltage, neutral, and building application

Delta and wye describe how a three-phase transformer’s windings are connected; wye’s neutral wire is what lets a building supply both 120V outlets and 208V (or 480V) equipment from the same service.

- Delta connection (Δ):
- Three windings connected end-to-end forming a closed triangle (like the Greek letter Δ).
- No neutral wire in a standard 3-wire delta — only three line conductors. A 4-wire high-leg delta is the exception.
- Line voltage equals phase voltage (no √3 factor).

- Large commercial/industrial → 277/480V three-phase wye (lighting at 277V, motors at 480V).
- Industrial heavy machinery → may use delta for robust motor service.
