Code Process & Fire Accessconcept
Fire department access and fire lanes
One-line orientation
A fire apparatus access road, or fire lane, gives fire trucks a clear route to the building. Its width, overhead clearance, turning space, load capacity, and hose-reach limit affect the site plan.
Key points
- Width: minimum unobstructed width of 20 feet (exclusive of shoulders) to accommodate fire apparatus.
- Vertical clearance: at least 13 ft 6 in. of overhead clearance (watch canopies, soffits, signage, bridges, low trees).
- Proximity / hose reach: fire lanes must extend to within 150 feet of all portions of the building (by an approved route around the exterior) — this is the hose-reach limit and the rule that most drives site planning.
- Load capacity: the surface must support the weight of fire trucks (heavy — on the order of tens of tons), so it’s a structural pavement question, not just striping.
- Turning + connectivity: adequate turning radii for apparatus, connection to public roadways, and routes free of obstructions.
- Marking: clearly identified with “FIRE LANE — NO PARKING” signage or pavement markings.
Confusions / comparison
| Requirement | Code value (IFC 2021) | What it’s driven by | Site-planning effect |
|---|---|---|---|
| Clear width | 20 ft min | Apparatus footprint | Road/drive width minimum |
| Vertical clearance | 13’-6” min | Truck + equipment height | Limits overhangs, canopies, low structures |
| Proximity to building | 150 ft max | Hose reach | Drives road + building placement |
| Load capacity | Supports a fire truck (tens of tons) | Apparatus weight | Pavement structural design |
| Turning radius | Adequate for apparatus | Maneuvering | Curve geometry, hammerheads/cul-de-sacs |
