Water types and treatment: blackwater, greywater, hard water, and reuse

Blackwater and greywater describe wastewater sources and reuse limits. Hard water is a separate condition caused by dissolved calcium and magnesium.

Key points

  • Blackwater: includes toilet waste and other wastewater sources defined by local rules. It needs extensive treatment before any approved reuse.
  • Greywater: wastewater that excludes toilet waste; other included sources vary by local rules. It may be reused for irrigation or toilet flushing after treatment matched to the intended use and local requirements.
  • Reclaimed water: wastewater that has been treated so it can be used again for an approved nonpotable or potable purpose, depending on the treatment level and local rules.
  • Hard water: contains dissolved calcium and magnesium ions that cause mineral scale buildup inside pipes, reduce heat-exchanger efficiency, and shorten water heater life.
  • Hard water treatment options:
    • Aeration — exposes water to air to release gases and oxidize iron/manganese for filtering; not effective against calcium/magnesium hardness.
    • Reverse osmosis (RO) — forces water through a semi-permeable membrane under pressure; removes hardness ions plus many other impurities.
    • Ion-exchange softener — passes water through a resin bed; Ca²⁺ and Mg²⁺ ions are swapped for Na⁺ or K⁺ ions, reducing scale-forming hardness.
  • Greywater reuse rules: treatment required before any reuse; local codes govern permissible applications (irrigation vs. toilet flushing vs. none); cross-connection with potable supply is prohibited.

Greywater is not automatically safe to reuse; permitted sources and end uses are code-regulated. Aeration does not remove Ca/Mg hardness.
