- Hard water treatment options:
- Aeration — exposes water to air to release gases and oxidize iron/manganese for filtering; not effective against calcium/magnesium hardness.
- Reverse osmosis (RO) — forces water through a semi-permeable membrane under pressure; removes hardness ions plus many other impurities.
- Ion-exchange softener — passes water through a resin bed; Ca²⁺ and Mg²⁺ ions are swapped for Na⁺ or K⁺ ions, reducing scale-forming hardness.
- Greywater reuse rules: treatment required before any reuse; local codes govern permissible applications (irrigation vs. toilet flushing vs. none); cross-connection with potable supply is prohibited.
