Flat glass production: sheet, plate, float
One-line orientation
Flat glass evolved through three production methods — sheet, plate, and float — and the tested takeaway is that float (glass floated on molten tin) is today’s default while plate is largely historical.

- Sheet glass:
- Drawn and fire-polished surfaces.
- Leaves some distortion (waviness) — acceptable for cheaper/older glazing.
- Plate glass:
- Rolled, then ground and polished to make it clear and undistorted.
- High optical quality, but the polishing step is expensive → now largely historical.
- Float glass:
- Molten glass is floated on a bath of molten tin.
- Comes out clear, flat, and distortion-free with no polishing required.
- The modern standard — combines plate-level clarity with much lower cost.
- Big picture: glass is hard and brittle, used mainly for glazing (also insulation/textiles). The production method sets clarity and cost; the glazing type (annealed, tempered, etc.) is a separate axis.
