Escalators: specifications, arrangements, and design rules

One-line orientation

Escalator design is defined by four standard specifications and two arrangement types — the exam tests whether you can select the right arrangement for a given building flow and recall the key dimensions.

Key points

Standard specifications:

  • Angle: 30 degrees (standard; some manufacturers offer 35° for steeper sites)
  • Speed: escalators generally travel at about 100 fpm.
  • Vertical clearance: minimum 7 feet in older references/code contexts; verify the applicable A17.1 edition and jurisdiction.
  • Capacity: 1.25 people per tread as a planning rule of thumb, not a code standard.
  • Rise: varies by manufacturer — no single standard dimension; coordinated per project

Escalator arrangements:

Two main arrangement families control how up and down runs are positioned relative to each other.

  • Criss-cross (most common):

    • Up and down escalators overlap in plan — efficient use of floor area.
    • Two sub-configurations:
      • Spiral (criss-cross): the rider exits and makes a simple U-turn to the next escalator.
      • Walk-around (criss-cross): the escalators are offset so the rider must walk horizontally to reach the next escalator after reaching the landing.
  • Parallel:

    • Up and down escalators run side by side in the same direction, but in separate floor openings.
    • Space: stacked parallel and criss-cross arrangements can both fit within a two-escalator width, while a parallel spiral arrangement uses four runs.
    • Two sub-configurations:
      • Parallel spiral: continuous movement by turning at the landing.
      • Stacked parallel: requires walking around to continue; suited to minimal connections between floors.
