Outlet types and placement rules: GFCI, AFCI, and NEC spacing
One-line orientation
Outlet questions have two layers. First, identify the protective device: GFCI or AFCI. Then apply the NEC spacing and height rules for the location.
Key points
- Outlet types:
- 2-Prong: hot + neutral only; ungrounded; found in older buildings; unsafe for many modern appliances.
- 3-Prong: hot + neutral + ground; standard in all modern construction.
- GFCI (Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter): monitors current imbalance between hot and neutral; trips instantly if a difference is detected (indicating current is leaking, possibly through a person). Required in bathrooms, kitchens (countertop), outdoors, garages, and other wet/damp locations.
- AFCI (Arc Fault Circuit Interrupter): detects the signature of arc faults (damaged or loose wires creating sparks). Per NEC 2023 §210.12(B), required in nearly all habitable dwelling rooms — bedrooms, living rooms, kitchens, dining rooms, hallways, closets, laundry areas, sunrooms, and similar spaces.
- USB Outlet: standard AC outlet combined with built-in USB charging ports.
- NEC outlet spacing — general walls:
- Max 12 ft between adjacent receptacles.
- No point along a wall should be more than 6 ft from a receptacle. (The 6 ft measurement cannot “cross” doorways or fireplaces.)
- Wall segments longer than 2 ft require at least one receptacle.
- Kitchen countertop:
- No point along the back of a counter more than 2 ft from a receptacle.
- Counters longer than 1 ft require a receptacle.
- Receptacle height: no more than 20 in. above the countertop (NEC 210.52(C) measures from the countertop, not the floor).
- Special locations:
- Garages: outlets must be GFCI-protected. The 18-in. floor clearance is a mechanical-code ignition-source rule (not an NEC receptacle-height minimum).
- Floors: horizontal floor receptacles require a cover that automatically seals when not in use.
- Over sinks, tubs, or baseboard heaters: outlets are prohibited directly above these elements.
- Dedicated circuits: microwave, stove/range, dishwasher, and other high-load or permanently installed appliances often need individual branch circuits. Refrigerators are commonly placed on a dedicated circuit.
